Prof. Huib Ovaa visited Syncom as a guest of our Dutch Design & Synthesis lectures. His talk, entitled “Development of assays and drugs to target the ubiquitin system”, disclosed his latest research in the development of tools to investigate biochemical processes related to cancer. In particular, his group focuses on the development of techniques to profile cellular enzymatic activities associated with ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like systems.
Prof. Huib obtained his PhD cum laude in the University of Leiden. Afterwards, he moved to the Harvard Medical School where he carried out a postdoctoral research stay in the group of Prof. H. L. Ploegh. In 2005, he joined Leiden university as an assistant Professor and since 2009 he is a principal investigator in the Netherlands Cancer Institute. He has received many awards such as the Dutch society award for biochemistry and molecular biology as well as prestigious grants as VENI, VIDI and VICI from the NWO.
