Prof. Antonio M. Echavarren visited Syncom as an special guest of our Dutch Design & Synthesis lectures. A reference on the field of gold catalysis, his latest work showed beautiful examples of the application of gold-catalyzed reactions to the synthesis of complex natural products.
Antonio M. Echavarren obtained his PhD at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) with Prof. Francisco Fariña. Afterwards, he carried out postdoctoral stays with Prof. T. Ross Kelly and Prof. John K. Stille. He has held positions at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the CSIC (Spanish Research Council) and as Full Professor at the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid. Since 2004 he is a Group Leader at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) in Tarragona.
He has received several awards such as the 2004 Janssen-Cylag (Organic Chemistry) award of the Real Sociedad Española de Química (RSEQ) and Golden Medal and the Research Award of the RSEQ. Since 2014, he is a Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher and in 2015 he received the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award of the American Chemical Society.
