Prof. Floris Rutjes visited Syncom as part of our Dutch Design & Synthesis guest lectures. His talk, entitled “New Catalytic Approaches for the Synthesis of Enantiopure Heterocycles”, disclosed his latest research in the field of flow chemistry and organocatalysis applied to the synthesis of enantiopure heterocycles.
Prof. Rutjes obtained his MSc in chemistry at the University of Amsterdam, where he also received a PhD under supervision of Prof. Speckamp in 1993. He then conducted post-doctoral research in the group of Prof. K.C. Nicolaou (The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, USA), resulting in a total synthesis of the marine toxin brevetoxin B. In 1995, he was appointed assistant professor at the University of Amsterdam and four years later, he became full professor in synthetic organic chemistry at the Radboud University Nijmegen. Currently, he is also Director of the Educational Institute for Molecular Sciences at the Radboud University Nijmegen and chairman of the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society (KNCV). He is co-founder of the spin-off companies Chiralix and FutureChemistry.
